it's not just about chuck hagel. trying to get answers on benghazi means there is a different faction of republicans who are holding this up. they've also said they will do this regarding john brennan who would be the choice to lead the cia. he would be much more directly involved in the benghazi matter, but this is a way to try to pressure the administration to provide information that congress believes it has a right to have. now, the white house could certainly argue that what the president was doing or what time he went to bed, those sorts of questions, are sort of under an executive privilege. they don't have to tell them about that. it does have a political question. how engaged was the president once he was notified at 5:00 p.m. by secretary panetta that there was an unfolding assault happening in benghazi. those are things that came out through recent testimony through panetta, and the joint chiefs chair that had he had not spoken to the president again after initially informing hem. that created a new sort o

i think this will highly impact -- i think chuck hagel should be confirmed. if he were a democrat -- is he actually a moderate conservative, but if he were a democrat and were no, ma'am made, would the republicans oppose him you should those circumstances because of his views? his views actually are quite consistent with those of president obama. we just got re-elected. i think that given a vote that he will be confirmed, and i think once confirmed he will serve many that capacity well. >> as a republican who has served in a democratic administration and precisely to have a bipartisan approach, which is what bill clinton wanted, and that was the model, the paradigm for what this president was trying to do with chuck hagel, but now how does he reach out to republicans who have clearly rejected him in large numbers and have been abusive some in the process? >> well, he will have to go to the hell and work with them, and they -- i assume they still are great patriots. even though they may disagree with chuck hagel that they don't want it this country to be compr

it's just using chuck hagel as hostage for the lerchlg because wasn't even around during benghazi. >> it certainly seems -- andrea, i guess i'm skeptical of the idea that in the week's time they really need time to review what chuck hagel has said in the past, his speeches. he know chuck hagel has said controversial things about iran and we know he has said controversial things about homo sexuality that he has since apologized for. this delay seems to me maybe i'm being too cynical and political that that's kind of my thing, but this delay seems to be about the opponents of chuck hagel who do not think he is suited to be secretary of defense want one more week to see if there is anything that comes out that can be disqualifying for him. if there isn't -- if you are hagel, you never want to be twisting in the wind for another week while you kind of sit silently and europe independents do everything they can to kind of find something disqualifying? >> susan rice, the nominee that would have, could have, should have, some say, been secretary of state and lost because of benghazi in that

we've talked about john mccain and chuck hagel. once very close friends. mccain during the chuck hagel confirmation hearing was one of the most poignant, maybe ted cruise was the most poignant, but one of the most pointed critics of haling. mccain not putting his name to that letter. it's -- this seems like a foregone conclusion here in that this is much more for the public record and for history's sake why this letter was sent. >> and one more thing. before we leave, hagel, is this whole stir yesterday where. >> did you take money from the friends of hamas? >> it's lake-effect like this was a star claim we are bsh it got some legs, and it was all about theater. when you had all those senators, you know, people like cruise questioning him, talking about the friends of hamas, i mean, they were out for blood when it came to hagel and how to make a design in some ways. >> without even checking factual basis for their questions. >> no. >> you can ask anything and create a soundbyte, and people pick it up in social media, and it's off and running. >> there was

chuck hagel was, of course, not in office during benghazi, but that has been a big issue. this is mccain and david gregory on "meet the press" over benghazi. >> we have had a massive coverup on the part of -- >> a massive coverup of what? i mean, susan -- wait a minute. susan rice said there was a lot of confusion. i'm asking you -- >> do you care, david? do you care? i'm asking you. i'm asking you, do you care whether four americans died? >> i just asked you a coverup of what? >> of the information concerning the deaths of four brave americans. the information has not been forthcoming. you can obviously believe that it has. i know that it hasn't. >> of course, benghazi is another issue they're holding against hagel because it gives them leverage. >> right. look, that is a common tactic in washington. we saw it with the brennan nomination actually from the democratic side getting leverage to get some of the information about the legal analysis for drone strikes. so fair game. the thing you have to question here is how much is this about? there's a massive coverup of bengha

now lindsay graham wants i think every private thought that chuck hagel has ever ever had and every public word that he has ever uttered. look, i think it is shameful what he is having to go through on that side of this. they're not questions that are holding this up based on what his thoughts are on iraq or -- i'm sorry. not on iraq, but on afghanistan, but instead on stuff that's played out or in benghazi, which, quite frankly, he had nothing to do with. he was a private citizen. >> when we get to the budget issue, the president is coming out there, and approximate showing the dire consequences of what happens with this meat clever approach, as he said. republicans -- house and sfat are on recess, so there's certainly no negotiation going on even at staff level apparently right now. now what happens? we go to the next stage, which is the automatic cuts go into effect, and they start talking about a continuing resolution, and further kicking the can down the road? >> i do think -- i do think there will be an attempt and you saw this by the president, and you see the democrats in the senat
